Frame Ledged and Boarded Oak Doors

external glazed oak door

Our framed ledged and boarded style external oak doors are available in many different designs because of their construction method. The stiles and rails of the door are mortised, tennoned and wedged together to form a frame as the basic foundation. This frame provides a stable network of timbers skilfully machined to house the vertical planks. These planks are tongued with a bead mould or chamfer for decoration and are screwed and pelleted to hold them in place.

From a solid ED5 Oak door with no glass to a variety of different designs such as the ED5b, pictured right with a small window we are able to supply you with the door that best suits your home.

Please view our gallery below to see more of the different styles available. Look out for our ED7 & ED8 doors which have more glass letting in more light.

Framed ledged and boarded doors are very popular in period properties, barn conversions and timber frame houses offering a secure and durable door.

We also supply solid oak door frames, most commonly 90 x 70mm or 90 x 55mm in section, rebated to house the door and with a cill to the bottom.

To complement your door we offer an extensive range of hand made ironmongery. Please visit our ironmongery page to see examples of the range and also wood finishes for your doors.

Oak Stable Doors

Browns oak stable doors are constructed as the above framed ledged and boarded door with mortise and tennoned joints. These beautiful doors allow you to bring the outside inside and are particularly popular in kitchens. Our stable doors can incorporate any glazing options to suit your needs, such as a diamond window ED4 as pictured right, to a small square up to a completely glazed top or bottom.

Our external doors are supplied unglazed if a window is requested. We offer competitive rates for double glazed and single glazed units.

Solid oak door frames are also available, most commonly 90 x 70mm or 90 x 55mm in section, rebated to house the door and with a cill to the bottom.

Ledged Plank Oak Doors

Our ledged plank oak doors are constructed in the same way as the internal doors, with tongue and grooved, bead moulded boards and 3 chamfered ledges to the reverse. This is a simple and traditional style lending itself perfectly to cottages. Again this style can accommodate glazing, for example a small fanlight like in this plank door pictured to the right ED3.

Ledged plank oak doors can be made to any thickness from 20mm up to 55mm thick. This helps if you are fitting into an existing door frame enabling you to match the rebate that is already in place. New solid oak door frames are also available, most commonly 90 x 70mm or 90 x 55mm in section, rebated to house the door and with a cill to the bottom.

Gothic Arched Doors

gothic design oak door

Browns are proud to offer this beautifully designed gothic arch door. This stunning entrance door with its very distinguished design is a fabulous focal point for any home and remains one of our most popular doors.

As standard this door comes 45mm thick. Its arched head is cut into the styles which are mortise, tennoned, wedged and pegged. It is finished off with two vertical moulded muntins running down the meeting point of the three wide oak boards. These muntins can also be set off with studs to create a more medieval look.

The door and frame are also hand finished with a decorative chamfer and carved lambs tongue.

This gothic oak door can also be offered with a window, set into the centre board. An example of this can be viewed in our showroom with a bespoke leaded light.

We can offer this same door style but with a square more simple head that can be seen in our gallery reference ED2.

If you have the luxury of a wide opening, glazed or solid oak side panels can be added to your door frame to create more light.

Panel Doors

These panels are raised and fielded with either an ovalo mould or chamfer detail. The versatile style of these panel doors sit beautifully in Georgian / Victorian period properties and contemporary homes.

With a 45mm finished thickness of solid oak they are extremely soundproof and have the look and feel of a quality handmade door. Browns also offer these doors in softwood and other cheaper hardwoods if a painted or stained finish is required.

To add extra light to dark hallways top lights can be added along with glazing options to the centre of the door. We can produce doors with elegant arched heads or classic square heads to suit your home.
